More than 80 per cent of women and children mostly suffer social abuse after conflict because they are not part of conflict resolutions, Ramatu Budah Aliyu, Programme Manager of State Accountability and Voice Initiative, has said.
Ramatu spoke at seminar organised by Generations for Peace marking the International Women’s Day in Kaduna.
She said the women are being left with a bundle of responsibilities and as well faced with challenges ranging from lack of access to information and economic support, among others.
“You’ll find out that at the end of the day, women are the ones that are very vulnerable and displaced because they are the ones you find in refuges,” Alhaji Aliyu stated.
“The truth is how much have we considered bringing them to play a role in peace reconciliation and building.
How many times have we engage them in the question how does conflict affect you? We need to start doing that because they will bring out their aspect,” he added.
Earlier, coordinator for generation for peace, Mr. Abdiel Kuden said the seminar is aimed at observing the women international day and women history month as declared by United Nations (UN).
“The essence of the workshop is to draw more attention to the gender dimension of peace building as much as we know government is making efforts to secure the peace of the nation.
“We also recognise that the people in the community have an active role to play and much more easier and sustainable for people in the community take step towards building peace and resolving conflict than when an the intermediary is engaged,” Kude said.
