50 dead as twin bomb blasts rock Gombe market

At least 50 people shopping ahead of today's Eid-el-Fitri celebrations were killed and dozens injured when two explosions shattered a market in Gombe in Nigeria's troubled North-East Nigeria, yesterday.

The blasts were said to have been caused by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Residents said bodies were being taken away from the scene and wounded people were being taken to hospital.

The blasts occurred around 6pm as many people trooped to the market in preparation for the Eid el-fitr celebration, which signals the end of the holy month of Ramadan and which comes up on Friday. Security operatives were promptly mobilised to the scene to assist the victims.

Gombe has suffered several cases of bomb attack in the past with motor parks, security formations among other rowdy places recording casualty.
