Governor Muhammed Badaru of Jigawa State on Thursday freed 40 inmates from prisons in the state ahead of Eid-el-Fitr.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mr Hussaini Magama, announced this when he addressed the beneficiaries in Medium Prison, Gumel.
Magama told them that N504,600 was released by the governor to effect the release of the inmates with minor offenses.
According to him, the governor’s gesture would help in decongesting the prisons in the state.
"A committee was set up by the governor to go round the prisons and select some inmates with minor offenses that could not pay their fines. This is governor's way to show mercy to people because of this holy season," he said.
Magama urged them to be law-abiding and not indulge in anything that would make them to return to prison. (NAN)
