LAUTECH ASUU begins strike, bars students from writing exams

The Association of Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH) chapter on Monday embarked on an indefinite strike over unpaid 13 month allowances.

Reacting against the development, the Students' Union Government (SUG) leader of the institution, Honorable Bakare Solace Olabiwonnu, yesterday led a peaceful protest around the school area with an high turnout of student who were about to write their exams.

However, the leadership of the SUG has given both the Oyo and Osun State governors 24 hours ultimatum to respond to the issue at hand.

A student who spoke on telephone with News Express Correspondent revealed that academics activities on the campus have become paralyzed since yesterday, saying ''It was so worst to the extent that all of the students were sent out of the exam hall yesterday morning by the ASUU members. Even, many students still waited to see if there was going to be a change of mind so that the exam could be written, but all to no avail''.

Also reacting was the Speaker of the institution's SUG, Hon. Adeniyi Saleem, in a statement released on the development, He said: ''Our problem is not ASUU or the school management, but the visitors who are the State governors. They have shown negligence to the growth of our school. Should we continue like this? More students are being admitted and no staff is employed. The staff are being downsized. Time will tell should this continue as this will sooner or later boomerang.”

.

He further stated: “ASUU is adamant and has stood firm on her decision. They insist on not going back on their decision. Will we blame them? These people have been patient and dedicated to their jobs even when the state governments failed in their own right to pay salaries of workers.

“On behalf of the parliamentarians, I ask our governors to intervene as we want to write our exams. We want to pass and graduate. We want to help our society. We are stuffs and we don’t want our precious time to be wasted.”

He added: “For long our school has been neglected and obviously no infrastructure whatsoever has come from either of these states. Yes, one may argue that can’t ASUU wait till we finish our exams, can’t they suspend the strike till after our exam. These are all we debated and requested.

“It’s high time our governors knew that we are students and the offices they hold today, we will be there tomorrow. How then are we going to contribute maximally to our society if we are half baked?,” he added.
