Lack of funds hampers waste evacuation in Asaba

The Director of Operations, Delta State Waste Management Board Mr Cletus Bebefagha has said that the Board would not be able to continue waste evacuation in Asaba due to lack of funds.

Bebefagha made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Asaba.

He said the Board had not received fund from the new administration since it assumed office, explaining that the fund was for fuelling of waste evacuation trucks.

``We have not received any fund from the new government to fuel the trucks, that is why waste are lying on the Median along the Ogbeogonogo market and other parts of Asaba.

``The Board had been carrying on with waste evacuation based on understanding reached with petrol dealers, but the agreement had been overstretched.

``And if nothing is done to pay them, it will be difficult to clear waste from the streets of Asaba,’’ he said.

The director noted that the situation posed serious challenges on the Board that had been buying diesel on daily basis on credit to evacuate waste from the streets, among other things.

``The state capital will be in terrible mess if we cannot get diesel to fuel the trucks and evacuate waste for a day,’’ he added.

He urged the state government to look into the plight of the Board and provide funds to sustain the clean up exercise in the state. (NAN)
