ALBUM REVIEW: Limoblaze takes Afrogospel to another height

Samuel Onwubiko a ka Limoblaze

By ITTY OKIM

There is a very huge difference in the life of singer Samuel Onwubiko, professionally known as Limoblaze, since his first track in 2014 and now.

He now has millions of listeners across the world, a name familiar amongst lovers of afrobeats gospel and a fifth album to his name.

He released his latest album, “God’s Favourite Baby” on July 2 and the project has organic streams running into half a million already. This proves how much the people love his sound and this new kind of gospel music he and other creators of the subgenre are pushing.

The album has thirteen tracks and generally talks about God’s love; centering its message around real life, relatable stories experienced by Limoblaze and the featured acts.

The story begins with the first track on the album titled “Attention” which establishes God as an ever-present deity that comes through for His worshippers whenever they need Him.

In “You & Me'', popular afro gospel singer and son to gospel reggae artist, Buchi — Marizu is featured to tell about the intimacy he shares with God. This comes just before “Hallelujah”, a song that gets every head nodding and feet dancing with its groovy, dance-triggering bounce. It is a song of appreciation and one that can be compared to typical danceable praise songs in church.

But hey, it’s not just love of God expressed in “God’s Favourite Baby”. Track five is titled “I Need You” and it is written for some ‘Obianuju’.

I'm not sure if it's enough to conclude that Limoblaze is in a relationship, this song which is filled with super mushy and emotional lines is enough reason to be suspicious that he is in one. In it, he talks about how this girl is a major part of his life that he cannot do without.

“Hold Somebody” informs everyone who listens that they cannot go through life on their own. It emphasizes the importance of human connections and how people should be there for each other.

He says:

“I guess we all need someone. A little spark in the dark. I guess we all need someone who will hold us down when it all falls. Hold somebody.”

Samuel Nwachukwu is known popularly as CalledOut Music and is a Nigerian-British gospel artiste.

Limoblaze features this talent in his “Everything”; a song that describes what God means to the artist.

It is followed by “Tonight” featuring Sam Rivera who is an American singer. This song is a plea to God for Him to speak to the singers. Sam’s soothing vocals combined with the soft piano and percussions in the background makes this particular track quite an emotional one.

“Satisfy” has lucid horns and qualifies as a typical Afropop song. Asha Elia and Sal Ly made this magic with Limoblaze and it is everything different from what your regular faith music sounds like!

“Away” is a declaration that anything that isn't from God is not welcomed in Limoblaze’s life.

“Got This” featuring CASS is another international collaboration on the album that can be described as perfect fit. And just like “Good God” with Ada Ehi which has been topping charts and gathering numbers, it encourages the listener to trust God with their life's affairs.

The last track is Limoblaze realizing all that God has done for him and basking in this realization.

It's been quite a journey for the songster, but he has been able to keep moving from height to height; putting afrobeats gospel on the map, preaching his faith and making a name for himself in the process.

Limoblaze is that African pop star that puts Jesus on everything.
