Onitsha South Council Speaker impeached over allegations of gross misconduct

Onitsha South Local Government headquarters was yesterday rattled as 10 Councillors out of 17 passed a vote of no confidence on their leader, Hon. Emeka Akanegbu and subsequently impeached him from office.

The motion for impeachment which was moved by Hon. Nzukwe Uwaezuoke and seconded by Clement Akaneme was announced after the councillors read out the six sins of the embattled Speaker.

The offences listed against Akanegbu by the councillors include allegation of constant quarrelling and misunderstanding with the executive chairman which they said is affecting the entire Onitsha South Local Government, withholding a letter from the executive chairman dated July 10, 2015 and refusing to present the letter to the entire house.

Others are indefinite differing of the sittings of the House and inability to coordinate or champion the course of majority of the Legislative House.

Hon. Lordson Ikeakor was elected as the new House Leader with Nzukwe Uwaezuoke as the Deputy leader.

The council legislators also called on Dr. Mrs. Dingil Nnebuo whose confirmation as the Deputy Chairman of the Council has been hanging in the balance to take a bow and confirmed her as the substantive Deputy Chairman of the local government.

When contacted for comments, the embattled leader, Emeka Akanegbu said all the allegations levelled against him are false.

He said he is being persecuted for refusing to play ball on the issue of the appointment of the deputy chairman, adding that his purported impeachment is illegal because the House members didn’t form the required quorum.

Akanegbu said that he is not backing down but will challenge the illegality of the Councillors action through the normal process.
