Protesting workers paralyse activities at Delta Teaching Hospital

Protesting workers, Wednesday, grounded activities at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, as the workers took to the streets in total disagreement with poor staff welfare at the institution.

Residents of Oghara, the country home of former Governor of the state, Chief James Ibori, and headquarters of Ethiope West Local Government Area, were taken aback as the workers trooped out, describing the management as being insensitive to the plight and welfare of workers.

Leader of the protesters, Comrade James Ufuomanefe Isiosio, accused the Medical Director of DELSUTH, Dr. Lesley Akporaye, and the Director of Administration, Dr. Edafe Alexander, as the brain behind the ill treatment being meted to staff members of DELSUTH.

The protesters, accompanied by indigenes who felt aggrieved by the situation in DELSUTH, also accused the Medical Director of demoting indigenes and dishing out unnecessary sanctions to staff.

The protesters, numbering over 6000, called for the immediate sack of the chief medical director and setting up a board to pilot the institution, noting that the teaching hospital was bigger than what a single individual could manage.

Comrade Isiosio who is Chairman of staff union of the hospital and Mr. Sunday Obukowho, who represented the community, lamented the dilapidated state of facilitates in the hospital.

The duo of Isiosio and Obukowho appealed to the state government to save the hospital from going down the drain by sacking the CMD and his cohorts.

When our correspondent visited the administrative block, it was under lock and key and no one was ready to volunteer comments for management, but sources close to the office of the Director of administration explained that the issues raised by the protesting staff were already before the State Government, wondering the rationale behind the protest.
