Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has been voted the Best Performing Governor on Water Projects, South-East Zone.
Instituted by a non-governmental organisation, Rural Water and Sanitation Initiative (RWASI ), the award is designed to encourage stakeholders to focus attention and participation in the critical area of provision of safe drinking water.
A statement signed by the chairman of the organisation’s Water Award Selection Committee, Barrister Chimezie, disclosed that Governor Obi beat the governors of Imo and Abia states to clinch the award.
The statement explained that criteria and parameter taken into consideration for the award included funding and amount channeled to the water sector in the state from 2011 to 2012, which is the period under review, transparency and openness of the tender and contract awarding process for water projects and rural spread as well as number of projects executed within the period.
Chimezie said the award would be presented to Governor Obi at a dinner to mark the 2013 RWASI Water Awards on March 21st at Rock View Royale Hotel, Wuse Two, in the Nigerian capital, Abuja. News Express learnt that the award would be presented by the Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe, as part of the events to mark the 2013 World Water Week.
