River of floating corpses: Obi saved us from epidemic —Community

The Amansea community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, South-East Nigeria, has expressed gratitude to Governor Peter Obi for his prompt intervention, which community leaders said saved their people from the outbreak of an epidemic and from the socio-economic difficulties that could have resulted from the dead bodies found floating on Ezu River in January.

In a letter to the governor signed by the traditional ruler of the town, Igwe Kenneth Okonkwo, and the President General, Mr. Lawrence Okafor, the community recalled that Obi did not only cut short his overseas trip on receiving a report on the incident but also rushed down to the scene and put necessary measures in place to keep the situation under control.

The letter recalled that the governor promptly ordered and sponsored the evacuation of the bodies and expended huge resources for the autopsy at the State Teaching Hospital Awka to establish the possible cause of death.

According to the letter, a copy of which is in the possession of News Express, Governor Obi also put a machinery in motion for immediate supply of water to the community and neighbouring communities via tankers of water, bags of satchet water and cartons of bottled water twice daily, as alternative source of water supply following the pollution of Ezu River, the main source of water to the area.

The letter equally noted that the governor directed the fumigation of the river and the entire community to save the people from possible outbreak of disease from the decomposing bodies. It said he at the same time approved immediate drilling of a motorised borehole, now actualised, to provide regular water supply as well as approved the construction of the abandoned Amansea Bypass to link the expressway to the old road in Amowole Village as part of measures to upgrade infrastructural facilities in the area.

The community pledged its continued support to the Obi administration and prayed for God to continue to reward him.
