Less than a month after his celebrated return to the country following over three months’ medical leave, Enugu State Governor, Barrister Sullivan Chime, has been flown abroad again as a result of health complications, according to reports.
Chime returned to the country on February 8 after 140 days absence during which his lieutenants claimed that he was holidaying abroad despite media reports that he was in search of treatment for an undisclosed ailment. The week after his return, the embattled governor confessed to newsmen that he had actually gone to London to treat nose cancer.
“The treatment altogether lasted for 12 weeks,” he said, adding:“The medical treatment officially ended on December 10. Of course, when treatment ends, that is when the real thing starts. What the doctors said when I had commenced treatment was that I should stay off work for six months. That was their recommendation, but by the first week of January when my case went up for review, they were shocked at the recovery rate. The scan showed that the tumour and nose fluid had disappeared completely, not even a scar was left behind and although I won’t like to use the expression that they have declared me cancer free, but that was exactly what happened.
“Cancer is cancer and one will be required to go there from time to time for check up to make sure it does not raise its ugly head again. But as things are now, they have succeeded in curing that disease that was detected in September 2012.”
Chime’s optimism however seems to have been misplaced. A report this evening in the London-based elombah.com said he has been “taken back to hospital for treatment.”
News Express reports that Chime, who looked as someone lacking strength, had et to resume work after his return, indicating that he might have hurriedly come home due to pressure from the opposition which, using Save Enugu Group as a vehicle, mounted a fierce campaign for his return or the transfer of power to his deputy, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi.
