Kano Governor laments shortage of policemen, sends SOS

Kano State Governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, has lamented the shortage of manpower in the state police command and appealed to the Federal Government to consider the state’s request for more policemen. He told the federal authorities to bear in mind the nature and dynamism of Kano, which he said is currently serviced by the only 7,000 officers.

The governor sent the SOS when he received the new state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Musa A. Daura, who paid him a courtesy call over the weekend.

He suggested partnership between the state and federal governments in recruiting, training and posting Kano state indigenes into the police, proposing that the state government can fund the training of those recruited. In this regard, Gov. Kwankwaso revealed that the state government has written formally to the federal authorities and is awaiting response.

He then thanked the CP for the visit and assured him of support and cooperation to enable him to discharge his constitutional responsibility well.

The governor disclosed that his administration is considering removing check points mounted at different locations in the state soon, so as to facilitate free-flow of traffic.

“Considering improvement of security situation in Kano state, the state government may soon remove the check points so that normalcy can be fully restored,” he said, pointing out that government is working tirelessly with all security agents to restore peace and stability in the state.

Kwankwaso maintained that the current security challenges facing the state needs collective efforts to address.

He then called on the Ulama, academicians and traditional rulers to join hands with the government for tranquility to prevail in the state.

Speaking earlier, Alhaji Daura said he was at Government House to formally introduce himself to the governor and seek support to make Kano free of security threats. He promised to do his best to protect lives and property in the state.

The new CP commended Kwankwaso for his efforts to make Kano a mega city, noting that the on-going developmental projects embarked upon in the state will enhance security and generally improve public well being.
