The explosion that rocked the FESTAC area Lagos this morning has nothing to do with terrorism, a spokesman for the Nigeria Police has said.
FESTAC Area Commander, Dan Okoro, told a News Express Special Correspondent that the explosion was the fallout of a crisis within the Sand Diggers Union. “It was an explosive device,” he said, giving the name of the man who died in the blast as Pius Oladele.
He ruled out any involvement of the Boo Haram Islamic terrorists who have in the past few years sustained a violent campaign in the northern parts of Nigeria.
The victim, Mr. Oladele, was Chairman of the local Sand Diggers Union and was the actual target of the perpetrators, according to Mr. Okoro. The middle-aged Oladele, a husband of two and father of five, was killed when a bomb planted under FESTAC/Mile 2 link bridge, few metres away from his office, exploded. The blast also injured a policeman who visited the deceased, whose body has been taken to the mortuary.
Armed mobile police officers have cordoned off the scene of the incident.
No arrest has yet been made, according to the Police Area Commander, who confirmed that the incident is being investigated.
