The Ebola scare has spread to the on-going Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland. A cyclist competing in the Games was held in quarantine for four days over fears he may have brought Ebola into Britain, while another athlete is presently on the run reportedly in connection with the dreaded disease.

Road cyclist Moses Sesay, from Sierra Leone, was admitted to hospital in Glasgow last week after falling ill.

Sesay was tested for several conditions, including Ebola, but was given the all-clear and released on Monday, in time to compete in Thursday’s men’s individual time trial, finishing 56th.

Meanwhile, his roommate Mohamed Tholley has vanished, reportedly in connection with the Ebola scare.

The 25-year-old Tholley, Sierra Leone’s mountain biking champion, was due to compete in the time trial event in Glasgow on Thursday and the road race on today, but never turned up at the start line. Senior figures in the Sierra Leone team believe he may have absconded over fears about the deadly disease.

Sierra Leone declared a state of public emergency over the killer virus earlier this week.

Sesay, 32, has said that he and his fellow teammates are terrified of going back to Sierra Leone, where the deadly Ebola virus is causing panic.

His words: “All of us are scared about going back. We have a three-month visa in our passports and, if I have the opportunity, I will stay here until this ends.

“I’m worried about my family back home. I have a wife and a baby girl who is five-months-old. I want to talk with them but I haven’t had the chance yet.

“It’s scary over there. My mother is a medical nurse so she may have to treat people. My wife is also doing work in the medical field.”

A spokesman for Glasgow 2014 said: “There is no Ebola in the Athletes Village of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

“We can confirm an athlete was tested for a number of things when he fell ill last week, including Ebola. The tests were negative and the athlete competed in his event on Thursday.

“We are dismayed by some of the sensational and misleading headlines to date.”
