A group of 11 members of the Oyo State House of Assembly late yesterday in the state capital, Ibadan, dismissed as mere rumour the news making the rounds that the State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, had been served with impeachment notice.

Addressing an emergency press conference at the House of Assembly, Chairman of the House Parliamentary Caucus, Hon. Fatai Salam, said there was no truth in the rumour, which had caused panic across the state.

Salam, who addressed the media in the company of 10 other lawmakers, said: “There had not been any allegation of misconduct preferred against him that could warrant any impeachment of such. As I speak, the 32-member House is still intact and solidly behind Governor Ajimobi.

“I confidently want to inform the people of Oyo State and the whole world to disregard this information circulating around. The House is planning nothing against the governor of the state because one of the paramount things that is very important to the desire of the state House of Assembly is to ensure peace in the state.

“Since inception, members of the House have been enjoying good relationship with one other irrespective of their party affiliations and, therefore, had no plan to disorganise the reigning peace in the state.”

On the few number of legislators that attended the press conference, Hon. Salam explained that the House is currently on recess.

News Express reports that tension had risen sharply in Oyo in the later hours of yesterday following reports that 24 members of the House had served an impeachment notice on Governor Ajimobi and House Speaker, Rt. Hon. Monsurat Sunmonu, both of whom were, however, reportedly out of town.
