Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako has refused to rule out the possibility of seeking help from President Goodluck Jonathan in his bid to escape the impeachment axe dangling over his head and that of his deputy, Mr. James Bala Ngilari.

“We have supported him all this time; he has supported us and in situations like these when the President’s support is required, we will seek it,” the embattled governor told newsmen yesterday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

It was Nyako’s second time of turning up at the seat of power – which political analysts interpret as a last-ditch effort to retain his job. He was at the place for the Council of State meeting chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan in the Villa on Tuesday and returned yesterday for the launch of the Presidential Safe School Initiative aimed at providing conducive and safe environment for school children in the North-East.

Asked to confirm if he had been trying to reach out to Jonathan to come to his aid, the governor simply said: “Not yet. It has not reached that crisis point.”

Though states enjoy autonomy in Nigeria as federating units, the Adamawa State House of Assembly is dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ruling party at the centre, which has President Jonathan as Leader.

Ironically, the noose started encircling Nyako’s neck after he wrote to the Northern States Governors’ Forum on April 16, 2014, accusing the Jonathan administration of embarking on what he called “full-fledged genocide in the North.”

Nyako in the letter leaked to the media noted that the adverse security situation in the North in particular and Nigeria in general was being felt by all, stressing: “While every state government is doing everything possible using virtually all its resources to stem the tide of near disaster facing all of us especially in the North, it is a well-known fact that the present federal administration has now become a government of impunity run by an evil-minded leadership for the advancement of corruption that is apparently enjoying the protection of the federal administration as a citizen of this country should enjoy but is being denied by the administration using its mass murderers/cut-throats imbedded in our legitimate and traditional defence and security organisations.”

In the circumstances, his expectation that an unforgiving President Jonathan would intervene to save him appears to be misplaced.

Another step towards Ntako’s impeachment was taken yesterday when the Adamawa State Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria came to the rescue of the seven-man investigative panel to probe him and Ngilari over alleged corrupt practices, by providing it with accommodation.

The panel, which was constituted by Acting Chief Judge, Justice Ambrose Mammadi, had been facing the challenges of finding a venue for its sittings following its ejection by the management of the J&J Holiday Villa Hotel where it held its first sitting.

The panel yesterday announced that it would resume sitting tomorrow, having served both Nyako and Ngillari with notice of hearing by pasting same on the entrance of the Government House, Yola.

The panel had to paste the notice there after security operatives at Nyako’s residence locked all the entrances into the building to prevent the person sent by the panel from delivering a letter inviting the governor to appear before the committee.

However, Nyako’s deputy, Mr. James Bala collected the invitation letter through his secretary, saying that he had no fears appearing before the panel because he had not committed any criminal offence.

Nyako had in a bid to stop the inauguration of the panel declared public holiday for last Monday and Tuesday, the day on which Justice Mammadi was billed to retire from service. The governor, however, miscalculated, as the panel commenced sitting without inauguration and the National Judicial Council extended Justice Mammadi’s service, thus forestalling any vacuum in the office of chief justice.
