Embattled Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, North-East Nigeria, is contemplating resignation if last-minute efforts to save him fail, a report from the state capital, Yola, said this morning.

In a report published by Vanguard, one-time Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, was mentioned as one of those involved in the last-minute efforts to save Nyako’s job. The report said Atiku, who hails from the state, “flew into Yola yesterday and is reportedly making moves to stop the impeachment from materialising.” It said that “indications emerged last night that Nyako was set to resign from office, barring any last-minute change of heart.”

Atiku’s intervention came when the two-day public holiday declared by Nyako failed to stop the seven-man impeachment panel constituted to probe allegations of gross misconduct against him and his deputy, Bala Ngilari, from sitting. Though the panel could not be inaugurated by Acting Chief Judge, Justice Ambrose Mamadi, who retires from service today, it nevertheless commenced sitting in Yola behind closed doors under heavy armed security guard at a private hotel, J&J Holiday Villa.

Nyako alongside his deputy, Bala Ngilari, is presently facing impeachment moves from members of the state assembly over allegations of gross misconduct.

The stern looking armed security personnel were stationed in and around the hotel, just as a military Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), was stationed along the street leading to the venue to scare away possible intruders.

With the commencement of sitting by the panel, the impeachment of Nyako and Ngilari could be in a matter of days.
