Immediate past governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, over the weekend declared that he is done with contesting any elective post, saying that he is a retired politician who is only willing to serve in any other capacity that will make Nigeria great.

Speaking with reporters at Ochuche village in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State where his former commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Mr. Dubem Obaze, received a chieftaincy title from all traditional rulers in Anambra North senatorial zone, Obi said:

“During my second tenure in office as governor, I started telling people that I will not aspire for any elective position in the country, but some people thought I was joking.

“Some have even been speculating that I will be contesting for senate for Anambra Central in 2015 or for another elective position at the national level and I want to say here that I don’t have such ambition. I am a retired politician.

“For me, I have done my best and I am at a happy place, enjoying the life God has given me. I have no regrets. However, I am willing to serve in any other capacity that will help to make Nigeria a better place.

“I believe that after serving as governor for eight years, I should allow other people go for political offices meant for the state. There is no truth in the rumour that I want to contest for senate next year.”

Obi further stressed that he would continue to fly the flag of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) no matter the nature of any appointment he may be given, adding that deliberate efforts would continue to be made to ensure that the party becomes stronger in the country.

Obi’s entry into the venue of the ceremony caused a stir, with the jubilating audience chanting “Okwute Ndigbo”, while politicians swarmed around him to have a handshake with him.
