The Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria (PRCAN) has joined millions of Nigerians to mourn the passage, yesterday, of former Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili.

The association in a statement jointly signed by its President, Chido Nwakanma, and Publicity Secretary, Jaiye Israel Opayemi, testified “that Mrs Akunyili, through her life’s work, contributed positively to boosting Nigeria’s reputation in the comity of nations.”

Continuing, said in the statement released in PRCAN: “Mrs. Akunyili served meritoriously in various capacities as university lecturer, as boss of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and as Minister of Information. She brought to bear in her various capacities a knack for excellence, dedication and sincerity of purpose.

“As Minister of Information, Mrs. Akunyili interacted with various arms of the marketing communications industry, including PRCAN, and sought the best interest of Nigeria. Despite its limitations, her nation branding effort, Good People, Great Nation, was one of such programmes that evinced a sincere concern for the perception of Nigeria by local and international audiences.

“Most importantly, her work at NAFDAC improved the fortunes of the nation’s pharmaceutical industry, won respect for Nigeria in the continent, and demonstrated to Nigerians the duty of care and protection of the best interest of citizens that a responsible government entity can deliver.

“We commiserate with Dr. Chike Akunyili and the family of this great contributor to national development, the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Government and people of her Anambra State and other stakeholders whose lives this remarkable woman touched.”
