The two-day security summit hosted by the Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, at the Women Development Center, Awka, has ended with a 20-point communique.

The communiqué, which was read by the summit coordinator, Chief Ekene Enebe, stated amongst other things, that the welfare of security agencies must be improved upon by establishing a state trust fund which will be headed by an individual with a good track record.

It also called for the provision of sophisticated digital equipment such as CCTVs, walkie talkies, scanners, operational vehicles and also the retraining of the Anambra Vigilante Service (AVS) in order to ensure ethical and conventional practice.

Also advocated is the re-enforcement of moral education in both primary and secondary schools in the state as a way of shaping the mindset of the future generations in the state and thereby curbing crime.

The communiqué equally called for the development of a manual which will define roles and responsibilities of every party interested in providing security for the 177 communities in the state.

On the issue of border security, the comminuque stated that it should be improved as a way of curbing the infiltration of criminals into the state and as a bottleneck for criminals escaping from the state.

It further called on communities to maintain an intelligence data base for identification and determining the antecedents of youths between the ages of 16 and 45 years old.

Commenting on the summit, the state chairman of the ruling party in the state, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Mike Kwento, said that governor Obiano took a first good step in a good direction, adding that he associates himself with the idea.

“Until we sit down together on a round table conference, we won’t be able to find solution to insecurity problems,” Kwento said.

“There is need for us to sit down, most especially the traditional rulers, the president generals and various leaders of our communities,” he added.

Earlier during contributions from participants at the summit, Engr. Emmanuel Anyaralu, President, Africa Trade Centre, suggested that existing security outfits should be allowed to be independent. He said that traditional rulers as well as the elite in the society always work to influence the security agents which, according to him, does not do anybody any good.

He also spoke on the issue of sudden transfer of cases from the area of event to another area and called on the governor to look into the matter with a view to curbing it.
