The University of Ibadan’s Centre for Sustainable Development (CESDEV) in conjunction with the African Sustainable Development Network (ASUDNET) and Nigeria Sustainable Development Solutions Network (NSDSN) has announced plans for the 5th annual Ibadan Sustainable Development Summit (ISDS).

The summit, whose initiative is to provide a platform to discuss topical developmental issues of national, regional and global importance, is scheduled to hold August 25 – 30 at the International Conference Centre of the institution, with theme, ‘Sustainable Development in Pre-colonial Africa: Issues and Contexts’.

Briefing the newsmen on the mission of the centre, Prof Labode Popoola, said: “Any university worth its name must, of necessity, provide intellectual platform for identification of issues germane to sustainable development, critically analyse them, and provide leadership in finding enduring solutions that will enhance sustainable development.”

He added that the event was designed to bring together experts from across the globe – ranging from development practitioners, policy makers, politicians and academics – to present papers, annually, with a view to finding workable solutions to the myriads of developmental challenges facing developing countries. “It is an aspiration that is global and ongoing, and in order to key into the global goal, we are integrating economic, social, cultural and environmental objectives in development,” he explained.

Also in attendance were students from the University of Ibadan, University of Tokyo, and Prof Masafumi Nagao, from the University of Tokyo, and a Research Professor at the Centre for the Study of International Cooperation in Education at Hiroshima, where his primary work is to conduct research relating to the evaluation of aid programmes and projects in the field of education.
