Yan Diomandé is set to have an incredibly bright future. At just 19, the attacker has signed for arguably the world’s biggest soccer team in Real Madrid and will begin his debut season for Los Blancos as they face Espanyol on Saturday.

The Spanish giant signed the Ivory Coast international on a seven-year deal this summer, for a reported fee of $144.3 million. That not only makes him the most expensive African player in history, but one of the biggest transfers in all of soccer.

But while many wax lyrical about his rags-to-riches story – one that saw him hone his skills in the United States – his is also a story of heartbreak and a reminder of the traps that lie in wait for young stars who aspire to become professionals.

Diomandé was born in the city of Abidjan in the Ivory Coast. It was a humble childhood but one grounded by the importance of family and friends. A passion for soccer was there from the start and a young Diomandé could be found running on dirt pitches in just a pair of white sandals.

In a letter he recently wrote for The Player’s Tribune, Diomandé says he was nicknamed after Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos because of his ability to strike the ball so hard.

He was only getting started, but people could already see the natural ability that the youngster believed would one day take him to the top.

He started playing more seriously for a local team where he saw his aspirations grow. It wasn’t long before he was telling friends he’d be the next Cristiano Ronaldo.

The pivotal moment in that becoming a reality came when he was just 15. After representing his country at an under-17 tournament in Ghana, he caught the attention of scouts from around the world.

All of a sudden, he was a boy in demand. But as is the case for a lot of young talent in the soccer industry, the teenager quickly became a commodity. Agents, coaches and teams all wanted to represent him, to sign him, to have some say in his future.

Moving to Florida

Eventually, through a convoluted arrangement of partnerships which stretched from Africa to the United States, Diomandé was offered the chance to join the DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida.

He was just 15 at the time, but the move was supposed to help him develop in a professional environment which would prepare him for a life playing in the top echelons of the game.

In truth, though, it was also a way of hiding him away from other agencies and teams that were sniffing around the player. The idea was that he would stay in the US until he was old enough to sign a professional contract at 18, per FIFA guidelines.

So, with just a suitcase and a dream, Diomandé left his home and family in Africa on a one-way journey to the US.

Picking him up from the airport in Miami was DME Academy’s director of soccer Todd Eason, a man who would become a father figure for a boy being pulled in every which direction.

“Because he only spoke French, our communication was very limited on our drive back from Miami, which was four hours away,” the now Miami FC General Manager told CNN Sports over the phone.

“We just exchanged little messages on Google Translate to try to get to know each other. But I also had other French-speaking players on the team, so it was kind of let me just hurry back to campus, let me introduce him to others that speak the language and try to get him comfortable there.”

At DME, a small team of players would train up to six times a week and balance that with their studies. It allowed Diomandé to learn English and get used to a very different way of life.

He quickly formed bonds within the team and, despite staying relatively quiet, would come alive on the pitch. He surprised even Eason, who had only watched his video highlights until then.

Diomandé was not just faster than everyone else, he was more intelligent on the ball and was already confident leading by example.

“I assumed we just had another strong player, maybe a little sharper than some of the other players that we had,” he said. “But I think once he touched the pitch and started playing, it was like, ‘Wait a minute.’

“Once I saw him, it was like, ‘Man, this is a different level than what I have and this is going to be fun.’

“To watch Diomandé play, it was just different in every way. I was very excited to have that opportunity and for the boys around him to be able to play with him because it was a considerable difference from the others.”

Finding a new family

Under Eason’s tutelage, Diomandé continued to develop not only as a player but as a person. But being away from his family wasn’t easy, especially in an industry that sometimes treats young players as cash cows.

Instead of speaking only about the Beautiful Game, Eason would talk to Diomandé about his mother, who suffers from long-term health issues, and genuinely cared about the person behind the player.

“He always wanted to get to the point where he could provide for his family and get his mom into hospitals to treat her,” Eason said.

“I don’t think he’s driven by winning the Champions League; that’s a bonus, but he just wants to be playing at the highest level to be able to provide for his family and his friends.”

Diomandé’s time at DME Academy ended in 2024, but he had already been invited to trials at professional clubs around the world. For several reasons, each would end up unsuccessful until a familiar agency got back involved.

Ever since Diomandé had impressed scouts in Africa, he was being closely tracked and guided by American sports organization Blue Crow, which had invested in several professional teams across Europe.

One of those teams at the time was Club Deportivo Leganés, which played in Spain’s top division, La Liga, at the time.

With a keen interest in the African market, the club was tipped off about Diomandé at an early age and followed his progress in the US, eventually signing him in November 2024.

The move was managed by Blue Crow, which was keen to secure its financial interest in Diomandé amid all the rising interest.

The teenager’s move to Spain initially saw him play in the Leganés academy, then the reserves and then quickly rise through the ranks to the first team.

Turning professional

The club’s general manager Martín Ortega still remembers watching Diomandé train for the first time with the senior squad.

“He was the best,” Ortega told CNN Sports.

“The first time he took the ball, it felt like you were watching something special. You know, it was something impressive, special, not common at all.

“Even some of the players of the first squad, when training ended, came to us and said this player has to play with us.”

Just days after that practice session, Diomandé was called into the squad to play none other than Real Madrid in the league. In the 85th minute, the young winger made his professional debut as a late substitute. Although his team lost the match 3-2, his cameo was enough to prove he belonged at that level.

“The first time he touched the ball, he dribbled to Federico Valverde as if he wasn’t a special player,” Ortega said.

“He made an impressive match, and well, he helped us a lot at the end of that season. He played 10 matches and was the best, he was very impressive.”

Suffering total heartbreak

But in that same year where things were finally taking off, Diomandé experienced true heartbreak. While away from home, he received a message that his sister, Roxane, had died after her drink was spiked at a party.

“Everything I do on a football pitch, it’s for you,” Diomandé recently wrote in an emotional open letter to his sister and biggest supporter.

“I don’t even look at it like a game. I look at it like a stage. This is my chance to show the whole world what you saw in me. Every time I score, I’ll make sure everybody knows your name. I’ll make sure they don’t forget you.”

Roxane was one of the people in his life who truly wanted the best for him. Her death became another motivational factor in Diomandé’s meteoric rise through the sport.

On the pitch, the cat was out of the bag. Everyone could see what sort of talent the Ivorian winger was. Leganés tried to increase his release clause, but the bids were already coming in for him.

Eventually, a deal was made with German club RB Leipzig and a clause put into the package that meant Leganés would get a cut from any future sale. At that point, the Spanish club was confident he would soon be snapped up by one of the game’s giants for mega money, so was happy to play the long game.

“We knew what we had at home because we were watching him every training session. We knew that the player was special,” Ortega said.

“He reminds me of (Barcelona and Spain superstar) Lamine Yamal because of the way he’s able to drive, you know, to make it look so easy. It’s because he makes it easy and it’s so natural.”

One season excelling in Leipzig, as well as a brilliant showing at this summer’s World Cup, was enough to convince the top teams to start battling for his signature.

Move to the Spanish capital

Real Madrid, though, was not to be beaten and saw off several complications to finalize a deal. A lot of the issues revolved around who exactly represented Diomandé at different times of his career, with legal cases slowing down proceedings.

Several people from his past saw the move to the 15-time Champions League winner as an opportunity to cash in on a player that they always saw as more of a commodity – sadly something which is all too common in soccer and sometimes leads to young players not fulfilling their true potential.

But those who know Diomandé best told CNN Sports that it’s always been about the game for him, not the stuffy suits in boardrooms trying to squeeze out every penny.

Given the money paid for him and the talent he has, it’s easy to forget the player is still only a teenager. Just three years ago he was playing youth soccer in the US; now, he’s a global star.

Despite moving on from the DME Academy, Eason still maintains a relationship with his former pupil and attempts to help him navigate the often treacherous industry.

Eason acknowledges that all the agents and representatives from his past could have easily derailed Diomandé’s career, but in the end, it was the Ivorian’s pure talent that rose above everything else.

Joining Los Merengues will now pose the biggest test of his career. The scrutiny at the club is like no other, the media attention can be smothering and the level expected from fans is so high. The winger will be under the guidance of legendary manager José Mourinho, who is an ambassador of African talent (Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, Mikel John Obi and Michael Essien among others) but who is as cutthroat as anyone.

But Eason, who last spoke to Diomandé when he was in the US for the World Cup, said he doesn’t have any doubts the 19-year-old can rise to the challenge.

“My passion for our relationship is making sure he’s just prepared as a young man to handle what is about to hit him,” Eason said.

“The one thing that I don’t think a lot of people really notice is just how competitive he is.

“I don’t know where his ceiling is. I’ve never seen him be overly challenged, so I’m excited to see him with Real. He might not be listed on paper as one of the top three players, but I have a feeling he’s going to work his way into that pretty quickly.” (CNN)
