I. THE TRANSIT OF A SHEPHERD

There are deaths that quietly draw a curtain upon a chapter, and there are deaths that compel an entire nation to pause and re-read the sacred scriptures of a life. The passing of His Grace, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, belonged unmistakably to the latter. For two solemn days in August 2026, Benin City transcended its status as the geographic seat of an ecclesiastical province; it became an august sanctuary of sacred memory, fervent supplication, and national reflection.

A majestic hierarchy assembled: members of the Sacred Order of Bishops, hundreds of priests, consecrated religious, seminarians, catechists, knights, and the lay faithful. Alongside them stood top government dignitaries, political leaders, and representatives of ancient traditional stools. From across Nigeria and far beyond her borders, thousands gathered within the hallowed naves and joined virtually, united in grief and gratitude for a prelate whose earthly pilgrimage crossed extraordinary geographical and canonical frontiers.

Reflecting on the singular trajectory of the late Archbishop's life, Izehi John Okhueleigbe encapsulated the paradoxical grandeur of his journey in a memorable litany:

“He was a son of Anambra State, born in Kaduna, ordained a priest for the Diocese of Issele-Uku, consecrated bishop for Uromi, installed Archbishop of Benin City, appointed Apostolic Administrator of Warri, died in the United States of America, received with exceptional public acclaim upon the return of his remains, and was finally laid to rest in Benin City. What a man!”

Indeed, what a life. The funeral rites, commencing with the Vigil Mass at Holy Cross Cathedral and culminating in his interment within the cathedral mausoleum, unfolded not merely as the obsequies of a metropolitan, but as the triumphal homecoming of a shepherd whose ministry was indelibly woven into the ecclesial textile of West Africa.

II. THE CITY BEGINS TO GATHER

By Wednesday, August 12, Mission Road in Benin City had assumed a profound and contemplative rhythm. Holy Cross Cathedral, a historic citadel long accustomed to the major milestones of the Archdiocese, became the premier altar of intercession. Yet, the atmosphere was not one of despair. Christian grief, as Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins would later remind the faithful, does not surrender to desolate sorrow; it carries both tears and the radiant hope of the Resurrection. The Vigil Mass drew an imposing ecclesiastical assembly: forty-eight bishops, over two hundred priests, legions of religious, seminarians, knighthood orders, and civic leaders gathered to commend the soul of Archbishop Akubeze to the Eternal High Priest.

The presence of the State was equally formidable. Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, arrived alongside the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, and key state actors. Among the assembled dignitaries were NDC Presidential Candidate, HE Peter Obi; APC Deputy State Chairman in Edo State, Sylvester Aigboboh; Edo Central Senatorial Leader, Gen. Cecil Esekaigbe; the Governor’s Special Adviser on Religious Matters and Chaplain of the Government House Chapel, Apostle Sule Farade; and former Governor John Odigie-Oyegun, who would mark his 87th birthday the following morning. This civic presence underscored a singular truth: Archbishop Akubeze’s moral leadership extended far beyond the sanctuary.

The Vigil Mass commenced at 5:00 p.m., presided over by Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, Archbishop of Onitsha and Metropolitan of the late prelate’s home province. The homily was delivered by Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, Archbishop of Lagos, a classmate and contemporary of the deceased. Titled “Soul Reassuring,” the sermon moved beyond conventional eulogy to confront the assembly with the inescapable mystery of human mortality. Archbishop Martins portrayed the late Metropolitan as a stalwart shepherd whose contributions would remain etched in the memory of the Church. Yet, his message was primarily an invitation to spiritual inventory. Death, he insisted, confronts the living with the imperative of readiness. It was a sermon crafted with sublime theological poise: comforting without sentimentality, profoundly doctrinal, and reminding all present that the passing of another always interrogates our own stewardship of time.

III. A NIGHT WHEN THE CHURCH REFUSED TO SLEEP

The conclusion of the Vigil Mass did not disperse the assembly. When Rev. Fr. Christian Eyintiyen, the Communication Master of Ceremonies, invited the congregation into the Magnificat of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Cathedral reached the formal close of the twilight liturgy. What followed, however, was a vigil of extraordinary piety. The Church remained awake, keeping watch through the night. In this nocturnal devotion echoed a cherished tradition of the Archdiocese of Benin City, recalling the legacy of the venerable Archbishop Patrick Ebosele Ekpu, where serial Masses were offered to mark the transit of a priest who had spent his life offering the Holy Sacrifice.

At 10:00 p.m., the first of the nocturnal Masses was celebrated by Very Rev. Fr. Augustine Ehigie, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Benin City. At 1:00 a.m., the holy mysteries were again offered, presided over by Very Rev. Fr. James Chima, Dean of Abudu Deanery, with Rev. Fr. Aleoghena Mordecai delivering a stirring homily. At 3:00 a.m., the vigil continued under the presidency of Very Rev. Fr. Charles Omogiate, Dean of Benin City Deanery, with Very Rev. Fr. James Ogbeiwi, Cathedral Administrator, preaching. Finally, as dawn broke at 5:00 a.m., Very Rev. Fr. Benjamin Bodricks, Dean of Iguobazua Deanery, led the Eucharistic assembly and delivered the sermon. Interspersed between these Eucharistic celebrations were the chanting of the Holy Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and the solemn Recitation of the Office for the Dead. While the broader metropolis slept, incense and supplication ascended unceasingly from the Cathedral altar.

IV. MORNING AT ST. PAUL: THE PUBLIC SOLEMNITY

On Thursday, August 13, the locus of the funeral rites shifted to St. Paul Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin City, a monument historically associated with major milestones in Archbishop Akubeze’s episcopacy. From the first gleams of dawn, thousands converged upon the sanctuary. The ceremonies began with the lying-in-state at 7:00 a.m., affording the clergy, religious, and laity an opportunity for personal veneration and final farewells. At 9:00 a.m., with the sanctuary filled with vested clergy, the Office for the Dead was chanted. Most Rev. Anthony Ewerido, Bishop of Warri Diocese, presided, assisted in sacred chant by the cantors, Rev. Fr. John Egbor and Rev. Fr. Philip Oaikhena.

What followed was a breathtaking demonstration of ecclesial order. Over four hundred priests, drawn from the length and breadth of Nigeria and the diaspora, were sitted unprocessed, as it should be for a large liturgical celebration. The Liturgical procession, however, marched in sacred rank: military chaplains, officials of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, rectors of tertiary institutions, superiors of religious institutes, and representatives of the Nigeria Diocesan Priests Association, Bishops, Archbishops and cardinals. The procession was far more than ceremonial splendour; it was an ocular manifesto of the communion and apostolic continuity to which Archbishop Akubeze had consecrated his earthly life.

V. THE CHURCH COMMENDS HER SON

The Funeral Mass was presided over by Most Rev. Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, Archbishop of Kaduna and President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN). A poetic providence hovered over the sanctuary: Archbishop Akubeze, born in Kaduna State nearly seven decades prior, was being commended to God a mere twelve days shy of his 70th birthday. Most Rev. Donatus Ogun, OSA, Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Benin City, formally welcomed the vast congregation. His address articulated the deep grief of the local church while offering profound gratitude for the extraordinary assembly of grace gathered to honour his predecessor.

The homily was delivered by Most Rev. Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, Archbishop of Abuja and former CBCN President. Capturing the essence of the discourse, Rev. Fr. Oboh Eromonsele Paul later characterized the sermon in three fitting terms: “immersive, pastoral, and profound.” Archbishop Kaigama’s discourse fulfilled the highest demands of sacred rhetoric. He interpreted human mortality through the lens of Paschal victory, consoling the grieving while directing their gaze beyond the veil of death. He paid homage to the deceased prelate while reminding the faithful that for those who die in the Lord, life is changed, not ended.

VI. VOICES OF THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH AND STATE

A moment of solemn civic reverencing occurred when Governor Monday Okpebholo delivered a moving tribute on behalf of the government and people of Edo State. His participation throughout the ceremonies reflected the profound esteem in which Archbishop Akubeze was held across political and religious divides. Yet, the highest ecclesiastical weight resounded in the readings of the papal messages. Condolence messages from the Holy See, transmitted through Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, alongside the address from the Apostolic Nunciature, were delivered to the assembly by Most Rev. Moses Chikwe, Auxiliary Bishop of Owerri. These papal expressions united the grief of the local Church of Benin City with the universal heart of Catholicism.

Subsequently, the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Benin City, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Michael Oyanoafoh, voiced the profound gratitude of the Archdiocese to all prelates, civil leaders, and the faithful whose devotion had sustained the late Archbishop’s long and fruitful episcopate.

VII. THE FINAL ABSOLUTION AND CELESTIAL TRANSIT

The liturgy reached its climax in the Order of Final Commendation and Farewell. Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, Archbishop of Owerri and immediate past President of the CBCN, performed the solemn absolution, sprinkling the casket with holy water and incensing it for eternal repose. What followed was a majestic procession from St. Paul Church to Holy Cross Cathedral. Led by an equestrian escort ahead, the hearse moved gracefully, accompanied by a regal honour guard of Knights and Dames of all orders in full ceremonial regalia. On reaching Holy Cross Cathedral, an almost mystical atmosphere enveloped the grounds: as if on cue, the rains ceased, the cathedral bells began their deep tolling, and the schola cantorum intoned the Litany of the Saints. It was a moment superlatively beautiful and aesthetically celestial, an earthly farewell touching on the heavenly liturgy

VIII. THE MAUSOLEUM OPENS AGAIN

For only the second time in history, the subterranean mausoleum of Holy Cross Cathedral was opened to receive the remains of an Archbishop. The rites of interment were performed by Archbishop Kaigama in the presence of fifty-two Catholic Bishops, the Governor of Edo State, selected clergy, religious, members of the Akubeze family, and representatives of the laity. While the public ceremonies had been marked by grandeur and immense crowds, the final act returned to silent simplicity. The casket was lowered to its resting place. The mausoleum was sealed. And Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze entered history.

IX. WHEN THE CROWD DISPERSED

Thousands had participated physically, while countless thousands more joined via international broadcasts. Holy Cross Cathedral and St. Paul Church had served, for those hours, as the focal point of a national and ecclesiastical farewell. Yet, every earthly liturgy must end; the crowds eventually dispersed, leaving behind a solemn stillness in the places that had reverberated with song and prayer. For the clergy and faithful, there remains the lingering ache of loss. Archbishop Akubeze had been a towering pillar: a voice of calm canonical wisdom, a steadfast administrator, and a compassionate pastor. His passing leaves an unmistakable void in the institutional landscape of the Church in Nigeria.

Yet, through their overwhelming presence, the thousands who gathered wrote a testimony that official records can never fully capture: that Archbishop Augustine Obiora Akubeze was deeply, enduringly loved. He mattered to the Church; he mattered to his priests and religious; he mattered to his brother bishops; he mattered to the state; and he mattered to the ordinary lay faithful who kept vigil through the long hours of the night.

Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei. Requiescat in pace. Amen.
