The reported arrest of five Pakistani nationals in Benue State has raised serious security questions over how foreign nationals may be entering Nigeria through the country’s porous land borders without proper documentation.

The development Is particularly concerning amid reports that 23 Pakistani nationals allegedly entered Nigeria through illegal land routes from Cameroon in May 2026, without being properly documented by the relevant Nigerian authorities.

The five Pakistanis recently arrested in Benue were apprehended in separate intelligence-led operations in Otukpo and Ugbokolo, with police recovering 35 mobile phones from the suspects.

According to the Benue State Police Command, three of the suspects were arrested at Adoka Motor Park, Otukpo, while two others were apprehended at a hotel in Ugbokolo.

The suspects reportedly gave different explanations for their presence in the state. Three claimed they were in the area to market cosmetics and mobile gadgets, although police said none of those items was found in their possession.

The other two reportedly claimed to be dealers in Android phones. A search of their belongings led to the recovery of 11 Tecno Camon 50 Pro phones, while a subsequent operational follow-up led to the recovery of another 23 Tecno Camon 50 Pro phones and one Infinix Hot 60, bringing the total to 35 mobile phones.

The five suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi for further investigation.

The immediate security question is whether the five arrested suspects are part of the larger group of 23 Pakistani nationals reportedly brought into Nigeria through the Cameroon axis.

If the allegation is established, authorities must determine the whereabouts of the remaining 18 persons, who facilitated their movement, where they entered Nigeria and how they travelled from the border communities to other parts of the country.

The development assumes greater significance because Nigeria is currently confronting multiple security threats across different regions, including terrorist activities in the North-East, banditry and kidnapping in the North-West and North-Central, communal violence and organised criminal networks.

In such an environment, the uncontrolled movement of foreign nationals through remote and unauthorised border routes represents a potential intelligence and counterterrorism vulnerability. This does not mean that the Pakistani nationals are terrorists or criminals. There is currently no evidence in the reported arrests to establish such a connection. But the circumstances surrounding their alleged entry require answers.

If 23 foreign nationals were able to cross from Cameroon into Nigeria without proper documentation, the security agencies need to establish who facilitated the movement, where they crossed, how they travelled within Nigeria, where they stayed and what activities they undertook after arrival.

Nigeria’s security challenge has increasingly demonstrated that terrorism does not operate in isolation.Terrorist organisations, bandit groups, kidnappers, arms traffickers, drug networks and other criminal enterprises can exploit the same porous borders, informal routes and weakly monitored communities.

The danger therefore lies not simply in the nationality of an individual entering Nigeria, but in the possibility that unmonitored cross-border movements could provide cover for logistics networks, financial facilitators, traffickers, intelligence gatherers or other criminal actors.

This is particularly important along the Nigeria-Cameroon frontier, where difficult terrain and remote communities make effective border surveillance challenging. A person entering Nigeria illegally may disappear into the informal economy without appearing in immigration records, making subsequent security screening considerably more difficult.

More importantly, authorities need to establish whether the group was properly screened, documented and subjected to the required immigration procedures. The issue should not be treated merely as an immigration violation.

The reported arrival of a sizeable group of foreign nationals through an unofficial route should concern every security agency responsible for Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

It is not enough to arrest five individuals after they have already travelled deep into the country. The critical question is how they crossed the border undetected in the first place.

The Nigeria Immigration Service, Defence Intelligence Agency, Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force should jointly establish the complete movement trail of the suspects. This should include their points of departure, border crossing locations, sponsors or facilitators in Cameroon and Nigeria, accommodation arrangements, financial transactions and contacts within Nigeria.

Authorities should also determine whether the phones recovered from the suspects were intended for legitimate commercial purposes or whether they formed part of a wider, coordinated activity. The Federal Government should therefore investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged entry and, if confirmed, identify and prosecute those responsible for facilitating the movement.

The authorities must also locate the remaining members of the group and establish whether similar undocumented foreign networks are operating elsewhere in the country. (Zagazola)
