The administration of US President Donald Trump has launched what it described as a global campaign against radical left-wing extremism, declaring that far-left political violence will now be treated with the same level of urgency and force as jihadist terrorism.

The announcement was made on Thursday in Washington during a meeting attended by representatives from more than 60 countries across Europe, Asia and Latin America, where senior US officials called for greater international cooperation to counter what they described as a growing transnational security threat.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged allied nations to work together against what he termed left-wing terrorism, arguing that counterterrorism efforts have historically overlooked violence linked to the political left.

“Our counterterrorism doctrine has had a blind spot when it comes to extremist violence from the political left. Even today, the very idea that far-left terrorism could be a serious threat is treated as a right-wing fever dream,” Rubio said.

The administration characterised left-wing political violence as “a unique evil rooted in a deep resentment towards civilisation,” signalling a significant shift in US counterterrorism priorities.

Stephen Miller, the Homeland Security Adviser, accused left-wing extremists of exploiting civil liberties arguments to shield violent activities.

“One of the hallmarks of left-wing violence and terrorism is its completely pretextual and disingenuous appeal to civil liberties in an effort to shield its own violence,” Miller said.

He continued: “When the leftist, who does not believe in freedom, who does not believe in civil rights, who does not believe in any ordinary notion of justice protests that we are violating his rights, understand that he is lying to try to persuade people who are not closely following the political scene that some injustice has been perpetrated against him. We must stay the course and be completely unflinching in the pursuit of justice against these enemies of civilisation.”

As part of the new strategy, the Trump administration said it would move to cut off funding streams to groups it classifies as left-wing terrorist organisations. It also said international partners were coordinating efforts to dismantle what it described as the groups’ safe havens, propaganda networks and cross-border operations.

The administration’s position drew criticism from Democrats, who argued that the initiative was politically motivated. They noted that Rubio’s remarks focused exclusively on left-wing extremist groups and made no reference to threats posed by far-right violence, describing the approach as partisan.

Far-left political ideology broadly advocates the creation of a classless, post-capitalist society aimed at eliminating exploitation, oppression and class inequality. However, the Trump administration said its latest initiative targets politically motivated violence carried out in the name of such ideologies rather than lawful political activism. (Arise News)
