Andrew Murray Burnham, born on 7 January 1970, is a seasoned British politician who has risen to become the Leader of the Labour Party.

Following his unopposed election as party leader in July 2026, he is expected to be appointed as the 59th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 20 July 2026.

Burnham has represented Greater Manchester in Parliament for over two decades. He served as MP for Leigh from 2001 to 2017 and was re-elected as MP for Makerfield in June 2026.

He previously held several senior Cabinet positions under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, including Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Culture Secretary, and Secretary of State for Health (2009–2010). As Health Secretary, he notably responded to the swine flu pandemic and launched an independent inquiry into the Stafford Hospital scandal.

From 2017 to 2026, Burnham served as the popular Mayor of Greater Manchester, where he built a strong reputation for local leadership and progressive policies often described as “Manchesterism.” He identifies as a socialist associated with Labour’s soft left faction.

Burnham’s return to frontline national politics came at a critical time. After Labour’s return to power in 2024, his high approval ratings in Greater Manchester stood in contrast to declining support for Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Following Starmer’s resignation announcement, Burnham secured the Labour leadership unopposed after being nominated by over 90% of Labour MPs.
