If you have spent any time scrolling through Y2K Nollywood nostalgia accounts on TikTok or Instagram, you have seen her. Adorned in oversized retro sunglasses, bold lipstick, and dripping in unapologetic 90s wealth, Gloria Young’s character, Doris—better known as “Senior Girl”—in the 1994 classic Glamour Girls, remains the reigning blueprint for the glamorous, independent Nigerian woman.

But behind the internet memes and the algorithmic resurgence of the Y2K aesthetic lies a career trajectory that reads less like a glamorous fairytale and more like a masterclass in the art of the radical career pivot. Long before she was a household name, Young was an energy reporter for the Daily Times, braving the Lagos rain at government parastatals, enduring gruelling press conferences, and suffering from acute corporate burnout.

“Growing up, all I wanted to do was write,” Young reveals, pulling back the curtain on her early days.

“I used to think I was a shy person. I just realised that I just hadn’t come into my own. So most times, the easiest way for me to articulate my feelings was by putting it down. I was always writing, always writing.”

When her father pushed her for a career choice, her answer was simple: “Just let me be writing.” That passion led her to a mass communication degree and a stint as an energy correspondent—a corporate news grind that quickly wore her down.

“That’s when the mental exhaustion [set in],” Young admits.

“You go stand there, you wait for the news to come… you’re waiting for the minister to come back to give us the news, press conferences, all of that. I just wanted to write, you know? I didn’t want to be Barbara Walters.”

The break from the corporate machine came when she transitioned to television, initially staying behind the camera.

“I went straight to writing, so I was the one doing all the scripts on The Charly Boy Show at that time, and people like Patrick Doyle and the rest were the ones who were in front of the camera,” she recalls.

“It’s when they didn’t show up now, and work has to be done—you know how it is—I said, ‘Turn it around. Let’s do something.’”

The “Netflix and Chill” Trap

Ironically, a woman whose face populates the watchlists of millions across global platforms is deeply skeptical of the very streaming culture that keeps her in our living rooms. Our generation is locked in a passive loop of digital consumption—content to avoid the chaos of the outside world by letting algorithms dictate our cultural palate.

Even Young admits she understands the temptation.

“If you ask me to choose between staying at home to watch a movie—sitting at home Netflixing and chill—or going out to watch a stage play, I’ll sit at home. I’ll watch, you understand? I don’t want to go through the stress of traffic. I don’t want to go through the stress of all of that.”

But she warns that this algorithmic comfort comes at a steep cost: the loss of raw, communal Nigerian culture.

“Sitting down and watching a stage play is not the same thing as watching it on television. The thrill is just not there… Truly, if you want to pass a strong message, use a stage performance,” she stressed.

Side-Stepping The Ego: The Industry Power Couple

To maintain this kind of creative defiance for over three decades requires a rock-solid foundation. In an industry notorious for short-lived romances, Gloria’s long-standing marriage to fellow veteran actor Norbert Young stands out as a masterclass in separating professional ego from shared reality.

How do two massive Nollywood titans balance their artistic choices under one roof? By choosing collaboration over competition.

When interviewer Ayo Makinde pointed out that her “artist of the week” status is shared by marriage to a fellow veteran, Gloria laughed off any hint of industry rivalry. Instead, she emphasises how deeply rooted they are in shared mentorship—with Norbert historically training the adults while she trained the children and young school-leavers.

For Young, keeping the art alive under her roof is about honouring the women who came before her.

“People like Auntie Joke [Silva] mentored me, for instance,” Young says warmly. “She’s my major role model, you know, even personally—not just her work. And so I’ve always tried to give back also.”

The Anti-Algorithm Experience

For Young, the screen remains fundamentally “impersonal”. The stage, however, is a high-wire act without a net, requiring a visceral connection between performer and audience.

This belief is exactly why she is actively returning to live theatre. Her performance in the play Duro isn’t a nostalgic step backwards; it is a countercultural movement.

“This one is challenging me in the sense that I see bits of myself in the story, and I’m having to get it out of my system,” she explains.

“But then I’m turning it around, trying to empathise with the character. Duro is deeply personal. Duro is not something to play with. Duro is something that we need to push to the world.”

She laments the financial hurdles that prevent these raw experiences from reaching more young Nigerians.

“The private investors really cannot afford to put stage performances on the road and all of that, but there are so, so many awesome stories that can get out there with some kind of sponsorship, and Duro is one of them… Duro is not a television story. It’s a stage story.”

At a time when young people are increasingly craving real-world connection outside of digital screens, Young’s message hits home. Live performance shouldn’t be viewed as an archaic relic of the past; it is the ultimate, unfiltered indie event.
