The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on governments at all levels to take urgent, decisive and sustained measures to address the worsening insecurity across the country as Christians observed Black Sunday on June 14, 2026.

In a message to Christians nationwide, CAN President said the day was set aside to honour the countless victims of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violence that have claimed the lives of men, women, children, clergy, farmers, students and entire communities.

Describing the occasion as both a day of mourning and a collective call for action, the CAN President said the Church could not remain silent while innocent Nigerians continued to lose their lives and many families lived in fear.

The association noted that the period of mourning coincided with the celebration of Democracy Day on June 12, stressing that democracy is founded on the sanctity of human life, justice, the rule of law and the protection of citizens.

According to the statement, there can be no better way to honour the sacrifices that birthed Nigeria’s democracy than by building a nation where citizens can live, work, worship and travel in safety.

CAN expressed solidarity with bereaved families, displaced persons and victims of violence, praying for God’s comfort, healing and justice for those affected.

The association also urged authorities to fulfil their constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property, insisting that the security of citizens must be treated with the utmost seriousness.

While awaiting the conclusion of legislative action by the Senate, CAN commended the House of Representatives for passing the Community and State Policing Bill on June 11, describing the initiative as an important step toward strengthening grassroots security architecture and improving community participation in safeguarding lives and property.

The body further called on churches, Christian schools, hospitals, mission institutions and other faith-based organisations to strengthen security measures by promoting vigilance, emergency preparedness and collaboration with local security networks.

It urged Christians to remain united, continue praying for the nation, support affected families and communities, and refuse to surrender to fear.

The CAN President also prayed for God’s guidance for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other leaders, asking for wisdom, courage and determination to overcome the country’s security challenges.y
