Barely hours after the Anti-Cult Alliance Movement (ACAM) petitioned the Inspector General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, over alleged extortion and illegal detention, the Ogun State Police Command has charged one of the victims, Opeyemi Babayemi, to court.

News Express gathered that Babayemi was arraigned on Monday, April 14, 2026, before the Odeda Magistrate Court on three counts, including conspiracy, stealing, and breach of peace — the last charge linked to his petition against the police.

According to the charge sheet with number MOA/47C, signed by SP. Olajide Michael, the Divisional Police Officer of FUNAAB/Harmony Division, Abeokuta, Babayemi is accused of:

1. Conspiracy: “That you Babayemi Opeyemi 'm' Harmony Estate FUNAAB in Odeda Magistrate District on the 03/02/2026 did conspired together to steal the sum of one million five hundred thousand naira only the property of Alhaji Mobolaji Balogun and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 517 of criminal code amendment law of Ogun State 2006.”

2. Stealing: “That you Babayemi Opeyemi 'm' on the same date to place in aforementioned Magistrates District did steal the sum of one million five hundred thousand naira only the property of Alhaji Mobolaji Balogun and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 383(i) of criminal code amendments of Ogun State Nigeria 2006.”

3. Breach of Peace: “That you Babayemi Opeyemi 'm' on the same date in the aforementioned Magistrate District did conducted yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace for writing a petition against Nigeria Police Force Funaab/Harmony District after you have given a confessional statement that you used the money for house rent and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 240(d) of the criminal code amended law of Ogun State of Nigeria 2006.”

Babayemi pleaded not guilty to all three counts.

The Investigation Police Officer (IPO) listed on the case is PC Olabode Olawale - 0811 650 4528. The matter was adjourned till April 30, 2026.

ACAM’s Earlier Allegations

This arraignment comes less than 24 hours after ACAM’s petition to the IGP accused officers of Harmony Police Station, Alabata, of turning the police into “a private debt recovery outfit for desperate employers.”

ACAM had alleged that Babayemi and another victim, Rofia Oyinade, were arrested on January 31, 2026, detained for four days, and released only after paying over N370,000 as “part-payment” of a “fictitious N2.5 million fraud,” plus bail. The group said the case was built on “confessions beaten and coerced out of terrified victims” and that the business involved runs 100% electronically, with victims having “ZERO access to the company’s account.”

ACAM further claimed Babayemi was re-arrested on April 12, 2026, despite three petitions already sent to the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State, through the victims’ lawyer.

“Because of the failure of the Commissioner to properly supervise his men, the same officers who refused to charge the ‘suspects’ to court for months are now rushing to court today, April 14, 2026 — only because they have seen the petitions. Is this justice or cover-up?” ACAM had asked in its petition.

‘Breach of Peace’ for Petitioning Police?

Legal observers have raised concerns over count three of the charge, which criminalizes Babayemi for “writing a petition against Nigeria Police Force Funaab/Harmony District.”

ACAM had demanded that the IGP stop the “abuse of criminal investigation process” and warned that charging the victims to court on “trumped-up charges” would force it to “mobilize every legal and civil means to ensure justice prevails.”

The group also called for the arrest of the employer, Alhaji Mobolaji Balogun, for “false accusations, criminal defamation, conspiracy, and misleading the police for selfish gain.”

Efforts to reach SP. Olajide Michael, DPO of FUNAAB/Harmony Division, and the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer for comments were unsuccessful as of press time.

The case resumes on April 30, 2026.
