The Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has called for calm, dialogue and strict adherence to the rule of law following the arrest of Tracy Ohiri in a dispute reportedly involving the Minister of Works, David Umahi.

In a public statement on Friday, the lawmaker urged restraint amid rising public interest in the matter, which has generated intense debate across social media platforms.

She expressed appreciation to Nigerians who spoke out over the development, describing civic vigilance as essential in a democratic society.

“I would like to specially appreciate every Nigerian who spoke out and stood up for Tracy Nicholas Ohiri regarding her arrest in connection with the Honourable Minister of Works, David Umahi,” Akpoti-Uduaghan stated.

She stressed that no individual should be subjected to coercion or intimidation for speaking out, particularly on issues relating to alleged harassment or misconduct.

“As a Senator and as a woman, I unequivocally condemn the use of force or intimidation to silence anyone especially women who speak up about harassment or any form of misconduct,” she said.

The senator further appealed for constructive engagement between the parties, urging a peaceful and good-faith resolution.

“I respectfully appeal to the Minister, David Umahi, to meet with Tracy in good faith and work towards resolving any issues through dialogue,” she added.

Reaffirming her commitment to justice and due process, Akpoti-Uduaghan disclosed her intention to personally engage both parties upon her return to Abuja.

“Upon my return to Abuja, I shall seek an audience with both parties to discuss a possible resolution, as justice, dignity, and the rule of law must always guide our actions,” she affirmed.

The development has continued to generate public discourse, with many Nigerians calling for transparency, accountability and respect for constitutional rights.

The senator’s intervention comes amid a firm denial by Umahi, a former governor of Ebonyi State, that he deployed policemen against Mrs Ohiri to settle a disagreement over alleged campaign debts.

In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Francis Nwaze, the minister described the woman’s claims as inconsistent, contradictory and lacking coherence, a position he said had been widely noted by members of the public who followed the matter.

According to the statement, the police acted within their constitutional mandate to maintain law and order and investigate complaints after receiving a petition submitted by his lawyer.

The police subsequently arrested Ohiri and invited the minister in line with standard procedure for statements, the statement added.

The controversy escalated after a viral video surfaced on Wednesday in which Ohiri alleged assault and non-payment for campaign materials supplied during past political activities. The footage has since circulated widely online.

As the controversy continues to unfold, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s call for dialogue adds a legislative voice to growing appeals for a lawful and transparent resolution of the dispute. (PUNCH)
