Abba Risqua Mohammed, the only surviving son of Nigeria’s late Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Mohammed, has declared his intention to return to active politics in Kano State, saying his goal is to help strengthen the country’s democratic system and uphold his father’s legacy.

Abba made this known after a special prayer session held in Kano to mark the 50th anniversary of the late leader’s passing.

He said he remains committed to the public service values associated with his father, including justice, fairness, equity, honesty and anti-corruption.

He noted that individuals in positions of authority must rise to their responsibilities to improve the living conditions of Nigerians.

Abba previously contested the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primaries in Kano in 2014 but lost the ticket to Sagir Takai, who went on to become the party’s candidate.

He later emerged as the PDP deputy governorship candidate in the 2015 election, where the party was defeated by Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. In 2017, Abba announced his withdrawal from politics, citing personal reasons.

Speaking at the anniversary event, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Bashir Wali, described the late Murtala Mohammed as a leader of rare character who was deeply committed to the welfare of Nigerians and known for his integrity.

Also, the Sarkin Fadan Kano and Hakimin Fagge, Ado Kurawa, who is a cousin of the late Head of State, urged continued prayers in his memory.

He specifically called on Muslims to recite Suratul Ikhlas regularly for the repose of his soul.

An independent researcher, Ibrahim Ado Kurawa, said the late Mohammed left lasting legacies despite serving for only about 200 days as Head of State, noting that his impact on governance and reform remains widely recognised. (TRIBUNE)
