Dr. Craig Slapinski, Clinical Director and Co-founder of Spine Nerve Center Nigeria and Ghana says Chronic back and neck pain affects millions worldwide, but surgery is not always the best solution.

Speaking in an interview on ARISE News on Monday, Dr. Slapinski, highlighted the risks of surgical interventions and the benefits of non-surgical treatment.

“Surgery is very rarely the best choice for people that have chronic and severe back pain…there are a lot of risks associated with surgery… most surgeries only last about seven years.”

Dr. Slapinski explained that the most common cause of chronic pain comes from the intervertebral discs, which cushion the spine. “Over time this cushion begins to wear out and breaks down… that puts pressure on the nerve and that causes pain.”

He highlighted lifestyle factors that contribute to spine issues. “People that are sitting too long, lifting improperly, or driving too long… all those things begin to break down the disc in the spine,” he said.

Sciatica and peripheral neuropathy are also treated at the center. “Sciatica is a condition where there’s an issue with the disc in your lower back… Peripheral neuropathy most commonly affects diabetics and can cause chronic burning sensations,” he explained.

Dr. Slapinski said non-surgical treatments offered at the center are highly effective. “We gently pull the vertebra apart to take pressure off the nerve… we also do exercises, electrical therapy, and cold laser therapy.”

He cautioned against over-reliance on medication alone. “Pain is there for a reason… if we’re negating that message you’re going to cause more damage to the spine.”

The clinic recently opened in Lagos, providing the same level of care as their Abuja and US facilities. “The quality of care that we’re providing here in Nigeria is the same as what it is in the US.”
