The Kano State Government has intensified efforts to expand civic participation ahead of the 2027 general elections, setting a target of at least four million newly registered voters across the state’s 44 local government areas.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Kano on ongoing voter mobilisation and registration activities across the state.

He revealed that 267,790 eligible residents have completed their voter registration from August 2025 to date and are currently awaiting the collection of their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Waiya described the figure as encouraging but noted that it represents only a fraction of Kano’s electoral potential.

He stressed the need for intensified mobilisation and awareness campaigns to meet the four-million-voter target before the 2027 polls.

To accelerate the process, the commissioner said the state government constituted a high-powered sensitisation committee in August 2025 to promote continuous voter registration and PVC collection across communities.

According to him, the committee comprises the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Commissioner for Livestock Development.

It also includes special advisers, officials of the Hisbah Board, and representatives of organised groups such as the Nigeria Labour Congress, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, and the National Association of Nigerian Students, among other stakeholders.

He said the committee has been mandated to engage residents in all local government areas to ensure that no fewer than four million people are registered and prepared to participate in the next general elections.

Beyond voter mobilisation, Waiya also highlighted the state government’s development drive, stating that more than 900 projects are currently ongoing across Kano State.

He said the projects span critical sectors and are distributed across the 44 local government areas to promote inclusive development and improve living standards.

The commissioner called on residents to continue supporting the administration’s programmes and policies, emphasising that public cooperation is vital to successful governance.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency, citizen engagement, and democratic participation, and urged all eligible residents to take advantage of the continuous voter registration exercise. (Nigerian Tribune)
