The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has strongly condemned the recent attack on Hausa traders in Ekpoma, Edo Central, describing it as an unprovoked act capable of inflaming ethnic tensions if not urgently addressed.

The group accused some youths of chasing Hausa traders out of the livestock market and slaughtering their goats, calling the incident a grave injustice and a dangerous escalation of communal violence.

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, CNG said traders were forced to flee for their lives, abandoning their livestock, while some residents went further to inflict damage on the animals left behind.

CNG stressed that targeting innocent traders who contribute to the local economy and have lived peacefully in the community was unacceptable.

The group demanded immediate compensation for the affected traders, noting that the loss of livestock represents not only economic hardship but also emotional and cultural trauma.

“Our traders were seen fleeing the market, their livestock left to wander aimlessly, while some residents took it upon themselves to inflict further harm,” Charanchi said. “Such behavior is barbaric and undermines the fabric of our society.”

He reaffirmed that the Hausa community, like all ethnic groups in Nigeria, has the right to live in peace and security anywhere in the country.

“We will no longer sit idly by while our people are attacked and marginalized in parts of the South where they live as minorities,” he said, adding that the actions of a few individuals should not be allowed to destroy long-standing communal relationships.

Charanchi called on the Edo State Government and the governor to take immediate and decisive action to protect all residents, including northerners, and to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“The governor has publicly committed to protecting all residents, and we expect those commitments to be upheld,” he said, warning that the group would hold the government accountable for the safety of Hausa communities in Edo Central and beyond.

CNG also urged calm and restraint among Hausa traders, stating that it would engage traditional and community leaders to promote dialogue, address grievances, and prevent further violence.

“We remain committed to defending the rights and dignity of the Hausa community,” Charanchi added. “We call on all stakeholders to condemn this violence and work toward a peaceful resolution that respects every Nigerian, regardless of ethnic background.” (Daily Sun)
