Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has issued a stark warning that any attempt by the United States to seize control of Greenland could spell the end of the NATO alliance. Frederiksen’s comments come amid rising global tensions following the US military operation in Venezuela, which resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro.

Speaking to Danish broadcaster TV2 on Monday, Frederiksen said, “If the United States chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, then everything stops. That is, including our NATO and thus the security that has been provided since the end of the Second World War.” The warning follows recent statements by US President Donald Trump, who has insisted that Greenland should come under US jurisdiction and hinted at potential military action, while naming Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to the Arctic island.

Katie Miller, the wife of Trump’s deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, posted on Saturday the contentious image of the Danish autonomous territory in the colours of the US flag on her X feed. Her post had a single word above it: “SOON”.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen called the post “disrespectful” and emphasised that the island is not for sale. “Relations between nations and peoples are built on mutual respect and international law – not on symbolic gestures that disregard our status and our rights,” Nielsen said on X. He stressed that Greenland’s strategic importance, including its mineral wealth and location for US missile defence, does not justify a forced takeover.

“We are not in a situation where we think that there might be a takeover of the country overnight, and that is why we are insisting that we want good cooperation,” Nielson told a news conference on Monday. “The situation is not such that the United States can simply conquer Greenland,” he added.
