Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Tuesday officially commissioned the Kano State Neighbourhood Watch Corps to strengthen grassroots security across the state.

The passing-out parade took place at Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.

According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson on Tuesday, Sunusi Tofa, the corps comprises 2,000 operatives, including 130 females and 1,870 males, deployed across the state’s 44 local government areas.

They are to focus on intelligence gathering and combating criminal activities such as banditry, drug abuse, and thuggery in both urban and rural communities.

Yusuf said, “The Neighbourhood Watch Corps is a critical pillar in our strategy to ensure peace and safety in every corner of Kano State. I urge all members to be disciplined, honest, and dedicated to protecting their communities.”

As part of the commissioning, 88 Hilux vehicles and 440 motorcycles were unveiled to ensure rapid response and wider operational coverage.

Yusuf also promised continued investment in security infrastructure, personnel welfare, and collaboration with conventional security agencies.

Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, commended the initiative, stressing inter-state cooperation as vital for curbing crime in border communities.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sunusi II, deputy governors of Zamfara, Jigawa, and Sokoto states, security chiefs, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.

Yusuf linked security directly to economic growth, education, and social development, emphasising that peace remains a top priority of his administration. (Daily Trust)
