The Traditional Complementary and Alternative Medicine (TCAM) stakeholders in Nigeria, have called for the establishment of an independent ministry for traditional medicine in Nigeria.

They made the call on Sunday, in a communique issued at the end of its South-South Regional conference held in Benin.

The communique was jointly signed by convener of the forum, Prof Adedamola Bank Kadejo, South-South TCAM leader, Prof. Joseph Akpile, Prof Baba Ejiga, Prof Anastasia Ndidiamaka and Dr James Iwowarri respectively.

TCAM acknowledged President Tinubu’s innovative reforms, such as the creation of the Ministry of Blue Economy among others.

According to them, a dedicated ministry will promote advanced research, standardised practices, and enhance foreign exchange earnings.

The stakeholders believe that a dedicated ministry will give TCAM, the desired attention, regulation, and development, allowing it to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economy and healthcare system.

Besides, they noted that countries like India have since institutionalised TCAM ministries, which in turn, is yielding positive results.

According to the stakeholders, the proposed ministry is aimed at generating income, creating employment opportunities, and promoting affordable healthcare.

The practitioners hold the view that the creation of an independent ministry, will reposition traditional medicine for optimal contribution to national health and economic development.

“Upgrading the department to a full ministry will enable effective regulation, research, and development of traditional medicine,” they said

TCAM expressed optimism that the move will unlock the sector’s economic potential, promote cultural identity, and enhance healthcare delivery. (NAN)
