The Kebbi State government has distanced itself and the All Progressives Congress (APC) from last week’s attack on the convoy of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmad Idris, in a brief interview with Daily Trus , described as “false and misleading”, claims on social media that APC members were behind the violence.

“The Governor himself has no hand in it. He is innocent. In fact, when the incident happened, he instantly summoned a security meeting headed by the Commissioner of Police to ensure peace was restored. The APC as a party also had no role in the matter,” Idris said.

On government’s response, Idris said: “The Governor directed the Commissioner of Police to tighten security across all angles and warned that no political party or individual should engage in campaigns or use sirens at this time. A committee has since been set up by the state government, headed by the CP, to investigate the matter and ensure justice is done to all parties.”

He explained that the disturbance occurred when Malami arrived Birnin Kebbi with a convoy.

He said Malami came for a condolence visit, but breached the law by coming with a convoy and sirens, which he is no longer entitled to use as an ordinary citizen.

“His group stopped in front of the APC office, shouting slogans, while members inside were observing prayers,” he stated.

He stressed that other dignitaries, including PDP’s governorship candidate in the last election and Senator Adamu Aliero, also paid condolence visits to Kebbi without thugs or convoys.

Idris urged the public to remain calm, assuring that peace has returned to Birnin Kebbi within few hours of the incident, everywhere was back to normal life. (Weekend Trust)
