After what seemed like eternity, Nigeria’s major opposition parties this evening finally delivered the mega party they promised to give the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) a run for its money.

The PDP, which prides itself as Africa’s largest party, has dominated Nigerian politics since the country’s return to democracy in 1999. Now, it is guaranteed formidable opposition following the fusing of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) into a new party known as All Progressives Congress.

The birth of the new mega party was confirmed via a statement in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, endorsed by Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, Chief Tom Ikimi, Alhaji Garba Gadi and Senator Annie Okonkwo on behalf of their various parties, namely, ANPP, ACN, CPC and APGA respectively.

Addressing newsmen, Ikimi, who is the Chairman of the ACN Merging Committee, said that the merger became necessary to offer Nigerians hope and peace.

Ten state governors from the alliance parties had met yesterday in the country’s former capital, Lagos, to endorse the merger process.

“We believe that the PDP has not done enough,” said Zamfara State Governor Abdulazziz Abubakar Yari while addressing newsmen after the meeting. “We have the idea, the knowledge and the progressive intention to move the country forward. So, if you say that we are going to move PDP out of power, yes we are ready to do that, God willing,” he added.
