My situation is a bit different, but I had RK corrective eye surgery back in 1994. My left eye, due to a stigmatism, was cut on 3 times. Fifteen to twenty years later... well it's not good. And I'm not overly impressed with the "Specialist". I had joined a group on Facebook to learn of more and more people that had taken their own lives. My personal opinion... do not have eye surgery unless you absolutely have to. I was in my twenties and was drawn into the wonderful idea of not having to wear glasses or contacts again since I had worn glasses since the 3rd grade. I would never have put myself through that had I known what I do now. I am truly sorry to hear about your son. My heart goes out to you.
