An incident which would led to death were averted on Monday as some sections of Radio Nigeria Unity FM Abakaliki in Ebonyi State was gutted by fire.

The inferno which started by 20 minutes to five in the afternoon affected the production studio, the administrative department and the reception.

A staff, Mr Godwin Ugwuta, who witnessed the incident, explained that he was in the production studio when he noticed smoke in the area.

Another staff who was in the live studio at the time, Mr Kelechi Ogoamaka, said he narrowly escaped death as the passage leading to the live studio had been taken over by fire when he was pulled out.

The General Manager, Ogbuefi Rex Eze, said he was informed that there was a bang shortly after the Engineers changed from public power line to generator and thanked God that the fire did not affect the transmitter, the live studio and his office.

It was gathered that the intervention of men of fire service and a sudden rain that fell helped to brought the inferno under control.
