The National Assembly caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised the alarm over the recent arrest and detention of its newly appointed media director in the Imo State chapter of the party, Mr. Ambrose Nwaogwugwu.
In a statement issued on Sunday, signed by Sen. Ezenwa Onyewuchi, Hon. Bede Eke, Hon. Henry Nwawuba, Hon. Ikenna Elezieanya and Hon. Emeka Chinedu, the caucus said Nwaogwugwu was arrested and detained by officers of the Department of State Security (DSS) at the behest of the Imo State government.
The group described the arrest and continued detention of Mr. Nwaogwugwu as an attempt to emasculate, intimidate and decimate members of the opposition PDP.
“The use of security agencies to terrorise those who hold contrary views is to say the least draconian, reprehensive and a reminder of the dark days of our political history. It is our view that this clampdown on political opponents is an affront to democratic tenets and the rule of law and must not be allowed to continue,” the statement read.
The caucus also called for the “immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Ambrose Nwaogwugwu or have him charged accordingly before an appropriate court.
The law makers also urge the Imo State government and security agencies to respect the rule of law, uphold the fundamental rights of every citizen and stop incessant attacks on the opposition.
