A traffic officer with the Delta State Traffic Management Agency (DESTMA) has beaten the Chief Whip of the Legislative House of the Oshimili South Local Government Area, Hon Dele Ojekunle, to coma for allegedly violating traffic laws.
The victim was rushed to St. Luke Specialist Hospital, where he was resuscitated and placed on oxygen. The Chief Whip was said to have flouted the traffic law when he dropped a friend around the traffic light at the popular Ibusa Junction, on the Nnebisi Road, in Asaba.
Men of the agency pounced on him and attempted to seize his car key but he resisted. In the ensuing argument, one of them struggled with the Chief Whip to collect the key by force but in the process, disconnected the medical gadgets that were connected to his body. He slumped and went into coma. A witness said the traffic officials attempted to flee the scene but were held by onlookers and handed over to the police.
They were immediately arrested and detained by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of ‘A’ Division. “When they saw that the man was dying, they left him and attempted to run but we resisted them. They held him because he refused to dash them money.
That was how we saved the man’s life”, a shop owner around the scene of the incident said. She urged the state government to checkmate the activities of the traffic officials. According to her, they have become overzealous and corrupt. (New Telegraph)
