Gregorian College located before Tarzan junction Nkpor, Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been gutted by fire.

The cause of the fire is suspected to be electric power surge.

The inferno, which started at about 9:10 p.m. on Sunday night, affected the top floor of the three-storey building and was put off at about 12:45 a.m. on Monday.

A statement by the state Police Spokesman, ASP Haruna Mohammed, said that all the female students in the school hostel have been relocated to another hostel.

He said: “Following the report, Police patrol teams and other security agencies rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area to prevent hoodlums from taking advantage to loot while fire fighters were also contacted to put off the fire.

“The cause of the fire was suspected to be as a result of electric power surge. No casualty was recorded.

“Other emergency responders and local volunteers who were equally on ground evacuated the students from the building to safety.”

Mohammed said that all the female students of the hostel have been relocated to another hostel, adding that case is under investigation to ascertain actual cause of the incident.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police (CP) John Abang has called on residents of the state to always switch off all electronic appliances in their homes, schools and various offices when not in use to avoid electric power surge.
