•Senator Diri receiving his Certificate of Return on Friday afternoon

Senator Duoye Diri, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the recent governorship election in Bayelsa State, has been declared winner by the polls by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The declaration, around noon today at the INEC head office in Abuja, came after INCE chiefs met behind closed doors upon receipt of the Certified True Copy of yesterday’s judgement by the Supreme Court sacking Mr. David Lyon, who was earlier declared winner, on account of certificate forgery by his running mate. The apex court ordered that the next-placed candidate with victory in at least 25 per cent of the local governments in the state should be declared winner by INEC and issued Certificate of Return.

Senator Diri was promptly issued the Certificate of Return after the declaration by INEC.

News Express learnt from impeccable sources that he and his deputy would be sworn-in later this afternoon in Yenagoa, the Bayesa capital.
