Imo Senator representing Owerri senatorial zone, Ezenwa Onyewuchi, has called on women of the zone to engage in economic activities in order to assist in sustaining their families.
Senator Onyewuchi spoke in Owerri last week during another round of empowerment programme from which 400 widows and youths benefited. He noted that the call became necessary in view of the fact that women have a crucial role to play in the eradication of poverty in the society.
The lawmaker observed that apart from being builders of homes, women are also good managers of resources and materials hence the need to empower them economically.
He said it was for this reason that his office has for a long time made it a rule to include a significant number of women and girls in every round of empowerment programme organised by his constituency office including that of last December’s in which over 700 hundred people benefited.
Describing the latest gesture as a quick win initiative which does not necessarily require training of beneficiaries, the lawmaker assured his constituents that in no distant time they will witness another empowerment windfall.
The 400 indigent widows, youths and women who benefited from the empowerment programme were drawn from churches and wards in the zone. The beneficiaries received grinding and sewing machines as well as motorcycles.
While stressing that human capital development and empowerment are his areas of interest, Onyewuchi explained that that is the reason he has been adjudged the ‘father of empowerment’ within and outside the state.
He promised to continue to use the mandate of his people to serve them through quality lawmaking and oversight in the National Assembly as well as deliver democracy dividends at home.
Senator Onyewuchi charged the beneficiaries to put the materials they received to good use in order to improve themselves and wellbeing of their families and the society at large.
Also speaking, Dr. Shea Azu Okorie, Director General of Peoples Movement, the campaign outfit of Senator Onyewuchi, described him as an exceptional leader who has written his name in gold and wiped away tears from the eyes of the people of Owerri zone through excellent representation.
Okorie urged the beneficiaries to take the good news of the lawmaker’s quality and effective representation back to their communities, so that the entire people of the zone will be aware of his never before seen performance in the Senate.
Ngozi Diala, one of the beneficiaries from Obike/Elelem Ward in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of the state, vowed to continue supporting the lawmaker and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing them as believers in human capital development and empowerment.
Ifeoma Nwaogu, another beneficiary from Orodo Ward A, in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, who could not contain her joy on the occasion lauded the lawmaker over his philosophy of teaching people how to fish, instead of dashing them fish, a practice which she observed is common among politicians.
