Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, has described the feat recorded by the fastest woman in Africa, Blessing Okagbare, as one of the gains of his administration’s human capital development agenda.
Speaking when the management of The Sun Newspapers presented a letter of Sports Person of the Year award to Blessing Okagbare (now Mrs. Ighoteguonor) in Asaba yesterday, Governor Uduaghan stated that his administration invested in the athlete and other Deltans, observing that such investments were not only a blessing to Delta State and Nigeria but to all Africans.
According to him, the success recorded by Blessing Okagbare at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, was a great feat for Nigeria after years of not winning medals at the Games.
He said it was a thing of pride to see the world stand still for Nigeria’s national anthem as a result of the laurels won by Blessing Okagbare and Ese Brume, both of them Deltans.
Dr. Uduaghan stated that the greatest asset of the state is in human capital development, noting that his administration has encouraged Deltans to excel in their chosen fields.
“Blessing is a product of our Human Capital Development scheme and we believe that the state is not just rich in oil alone but is richer in human talent and we should be able to develop whatever potentials any Deltan exhibits be it in sports or entertainment,” the governor said.
He expressed hope that Blessing Okagbare would also do Nigeria proud at the 2016 Olympic Games.
Presenting the letter of award to the athletics star, the General Editor, Sun Newspapers, Mrs. Funke Egbemode, commended Governor Uduaghan on his administration’s giant strides in human capital development of which Blessing Okagbare is a beneficiary.
