The death has occurred of Phillip Osondu, former Nigerian international, after a brief illness. According to a report emanating from Belgium, his base, the former player drove himself to hospital for examination but could not make it back.
He was said to have felt unwell at work and decided to visit the hospital where he subsequently died. Osondu played regularly for the youth teams of Nigeria, but never reached the first team.
In 1987 he participated in the World U-16 tournament in Canada. Nigeria reached the final, but then lost on penalties to the Soviet Union. Osondu got the World Cup Golden Ball as best player of the tournament.
Another version of the story said that the diminutive forward died on arrival to the hospital after feeling unwell at work and was driven to the medical facility. He was born on November 28, 1971 in Aba, the present Abia State
