Some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State stayed away from the flag-off of campaigns by the party which held at the weekend in Yenagoa.
Among the APC stakeholders who shunned the party’s rally for the November 16 governorship election were the immediate past Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri; Mr. Werinipre Seibarugu, a former Deputy Governor to Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva; and Mr. Preye Aganaba.
Lokpobiri and Aganaba are former aspirants in the direct governorship primary election of the party conducted on September 4 in the state.
They are in court challenging the outcome of the primary poll which produced Mr. David Lyon as the governorship candidate of the APC.
Meanwhile, the People’s Democratic Party Youth Network has commended the state PDP leadership for shifting the campaign flag-off date of the party from Saturday to Monday to avoid a clash with the opposition APC.
The group in a statement by its Secretary-General James Oputin said that the PDP leadership displayed a commendable level of maturity by averting the alleged plan of the APC to use a non-existent clash of rallies to unleash mayhem on the state.
The group alleged that the APC planned to cause a civil disturbance with thugs imported from neighbouring states at the venue of the PDP rally.
Oputin said the APC lacked the capacity to win a free, fair and credible election in Bayelsa State. (Independent)
