The Bayelsa Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Wednesday said it has set up a special unit to avert clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the state.

The Commandant of the NSCDC in Bayelsa State, Mr. Philip Ayuba, stated this during the launch of the Corps’ Agro Rangers Unit at the command headquarters in Yenagoa.

Ayuba explained that the unit is part of the NSCDC’s response to frequent clashes and bring under control the unfortunate clashes between farmers and herdsmen which has often resulted in killings and wanton destruction of lives and property in the country.

He said the newly created Agro Rangers Unit is to ensure adequate security of agricultural investments such as farmlands, silos, ranches, livestock, agricultural processing industries and other agro allied infrastructures in the state.

He charged officers and men of the unit to ensure professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor Seriake Dickson on Security, Dr Boma Spero-Jack, who represented the Governor, lauded the NSCDC for launching the unit, describing it as timely.

He noted that the move will encourage investments in agriculture which in turn will boost food security and rapid growth and development in the economy.

Also, newly promoted senior officers of the command were decorated with their new ranks.

Ayuba in his charge to the newly promoted officers urged them to see it as a reward for hard work, noting that to whom much is given much is expected.

The event had in attendance Service Commanders of various security agencies in the state and their representatives amongst others.
